The above pictures has been making the rounds on social media. The place I got it from had over 50k shares and 100,000k likes. It seems harmless enough, but I can’t stand the message its making. It hits close to home for me because in two weeks I turn 23. I am writing this mainly for myself, but as well as motivation to you reading this.
I am someone who likes pain and likes being uncomfortable. I like those because that is when you grow. I recently had a meeting with my boss where I basically said “My job is too easy and I want to do things that I don’t know how to do.” If you workout the best thing you can be is sore. That means you have broken you muscles down and they are rebuilding stronger. This picture makes it seem like you don’t have to worry and everything will be alright. “Oh you don’t believe me? Well look at these successful people who at the age of 23 were struggling. It worked out for them, didn’t it?”
Below I will do a little back story on each of the 4 named people and will explain to you that you should worry and everything won’t be okay.
At 23 she had graduated from college with a 4 year degree in French and Classics. Once she graduated she got a job as a researcher and bilingual secretary. It says she was broke but she had a job and by all accounts made enough to pay her bills. That makes her like 98% of people out there. Two short years later at the age of 25 she came up with the idea for Harry Potter. While technically at age 23 she wasn’t doing great, she had career possibilities. She is also a genius and if you are reading this that means you aren’t. Shots fired at me and you. If you are 23, I wouldn’t bank on pulling the Harry Potter idea out of your butt in 2 years.
At 23 she had already graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama. While at school she studied play-writing and acting and was awarded the Pettway Prize. She may have had a job YMCA but she had a degree in the field she wanted to get into. Like J.K Rowling she is also a genius. If you’re sitting at home waiting to magically turn into to Tina Fey then you’re off to a bad start.
This is where it gets easy. She was fired from being a television reporter at the age of 23. I would like to point out that in order to get fired as a television reporter, you have to first be a television reporter! Oprah wanted to get on T.V and she did. She may have gotten fired, but she had a job in the field she wanted to be in. You are 23 and haven’t even decided what you want to do in life. Let alone to have already gotten fired from it.
Saved the easiest for last. He went bankrupt at age 23 meaning he took enough risks in life to where if he failed, he would go bankrupt. He went bankrupt because he started a film company and even signed a deal with a production company. That deal didn’t go as well as planned which led to him going bankrupt. Again, he was chasing after his dreams with no fear. He knew what he wanted to do and went after it at full speed, crashed, and got right back in the car
My main message here is whatever you want to do. DO IT!!! Yes, at the age of 23 none of them were who they are now, but they were laying the foundation for their life. They were either going to school, working in the field they wanted to be in, or were doing what they wanted to do. Don’t sit at home thinking one day you will wake up and appear in your dream job. That first of all takes talent. Secondly, it takes an insane work ethic where you out work everyone and then work some more. Thirdly, it takes courage. You will fail, you will not get knocked down, but you will get back up. Rocky said it best when he said “It’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward.” Lastly, they had a little luck. Not the win the lottery type of luck. I am talking about the talent + hardworking + courage type of luck where they put themselves in an opportunity to get the one break they needed to be successful. If you are waiting for your break but haven’t done the first three things I mentioned, you will be waiting for ever.
The worst thing you can do is only dream. If you only dream about what you want to do you will never reach it. The longer you think about your dream but don’t chase after it, the more impossible your dream starts to feel. It is a long journey but it starts with two important steps. Dream and then take action. These steps don’t guarantee success, but it at least gives you a chance.
If you hit a half court buzzer beater to win a basketball are you lucky? I don’t know. What I do know is that you were in the game. You can’t win the game from the bench. You can’t win the game from the crowd and you definitely can’t win the game sitting at home. It’s time to get in the game.
The NBA is right around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited. The NBA is my version of the NFL. I absolutely love it. NBA league pass has been ordered, fantasy drafts have taken place, and my yearly therapy session on the Supersonics move has gotten my mind right. At the risk of sounding cocky, I dare say I know more about the NBA than 99% of people out there.Today I am going to bless you, and your wallets with some of that knowledge. Since Seattle no longer has a team I have adopted the Houston Rockets. I stuck with the Thunder when they moved and loved that they drafted James Harden. When he got traded, I traded who I was rooting for. Today I am going to tell you my predictions for playoff seeding in both conferences and pick winners in each playoff series. A lot can change based on injury but as it sits now these are my predictions.
1. Golden State Warriors – Rarely do you win a championship and are still able to say nobody believes in is.
2. Los Angeles Clippers – They will be able to close out tight games with Chris Paul and Paul Pierce. The addition of Lance will you make you dance will help provide another playmaker. I also like there team chemistry as it seems like they had some real bonding time this summer.
3. Houston Rockets – They are the deepest in the league. The addition of Lawson will help get Harden off the ball and allow him to catch and attack the defense instead of having them set trying to stop him.
4. San Antonio Spurs – They learned their lesson last year when they didn’t clinch home court in any round of the playoffs. Look for them to continue to rest everyone but still clinch home court advantage in round 1.
5. Oklahoma City Thunder – Durant and Westbrook are the best 1-2 combo in the league. Ibaka is a good 3rd option if he stops taking so many long jump shots. Outside of them I guess Enes Kanter, Mitch McGary, and Dion Waiters are supposed to get me excited?
6. New Orleans Pelicans – Anthony Davis.
7. Memphis Grizzlies – They kept basically the same team they had last year just got another year older. To quote Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith Show “You’re no spring chicken anymore.”
8. Utah Jazz – The 8th spot in the west is wide open. I picked the Jazz mainly because I don’t like any of the other teams very much. I am putting my trust into you Gordan Haywood and Rudy Gobert. Don’t let me down.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers – Shocker that they are number one.
2. Chicago Bulls – I like that they got a new coach off season. Down low with Noah, Gasol, Gibson, and Mirotic will be a tough matchup for anyone. I am a little worried about the Rose/Butler situation but chances are Derick will miss a lot of game so it really won’t matter.
3. Miami Heat – I am in love with the heat this year. D-Wades health is always a concern, but there starting lineup is as good as anyone’s in the league.
4. Washington Wizards – It’s a tossup between them and the Bucks at number 5. I think Beal is due for a good season and Otto Porter will finally show why he was a lottery pick.
5. Milwaukee Bucks – I have a vested interest in the Bucks because there is chance no matter how small that they move to Seattle. I like their talent but am not quite sure how Greg Monroe will fit in.
6. Atlanta Hawks – I didn’t think they were THAT good last year. They were solid but never for one second did I think they were title contenders. The loss of DeMarre Carroll will hurt them more than the average fan thinks.
7. Toronto Raptors – Kyle Lowry is in shape. I know it’s nice when an athlete who gets paid millions a year to play basketball can show up in shape, but Lowry rarely has. Look for him to dominate and make the all-star team with Kyrie being hurt
8. Boston Celtics – They will squeak into the playoffs much like last year. There best player is Isiah Thomas then after that who knows? Evan Turner? If you want to see something funny watch LeBron James guard Turner. LeBron looks like he is trying to steal Turner’s soul away.

Beasts of No Nation
I had rare two days off in a row this weekend and needed to fill sometime. I pulled up a Netflix and saw them advertising for Beasts of No Nation. One quick glimpse that Idris Elba was in it and I was sold. Idris is my version of Samuel L. Jackson. I will watch any movie that he is in. I took a second to check on Rotten Tomatoes and saw the audience at the time was giving it a 98%! In about a 90 seconds span I went from never hearing about the movie, to seeing all signs pointing to it being great, including getting some Oscar buzz. I got my hopes up to high. I played the movie thinking it was going to be the greatest movie since Cool Runnings.
The movie starts out painfully slow. We are introduced to a couple characters early who end up getting killed about 15 minutes later. Unclear why we needed such an introduction for a limited role. The town finds out the bad guys are coming and they get most of the women and children out thankfully, because I didn’t need to see young babies getting gunned down. His dad and brother get shot as he watches but the boy is lucky enough to escape town only to get forced to join a teenage army.
Finally, Idris appears on the screen as the kid’s new commander. It took about 20 minutes to long for him to appear in the movie. I am here for him, I want as much Idris as I can get. Idris takes the kid under his wing, they attack a lot of people, and at some point everyone abandons Idris after he appears to go crazy. Smash cut to the boy being at an orphanage and we get a couple minutes of him trying to overcome the trauma from war.
I kept my description short because if you watch the trailer it tells you all you need to know and more. The biggest problem of the movie is language. The movie starts out in some language native to Africa and the sub titles appear below so you can read to follow along. That is perfectly fine. However, at some point it switches to English, but unfortunately the main character who is a young boy is not very good at speaking it.
It makes it hard to watch because you know he is speaking English as you recognize some of the words he is saying, you just can’t understand enough to know what he is saying. It’s like when someone calls you with spotty reception and you only hear part of what they’re saying. You understand what words you hear, you just don’t get enough to form a sentence around them. I would have preferred to watch the movie in a language I didn’t know. That way I could have accepted the fact I won’t understand anything that is being said instead of trying to focus on every last syllable. I don’t like the middle ground where I understand some of it, but not all of it. They needed to keep the subtitles on the screen for the whole movie. That would have helped it quite a bit.
On a positive note it is amazing that you can make a movie like this for only 12 million dollars. That is truly incredible. Also, we see the main character take his sword and swing it at someone’s head as hard as he can. I don’t know if you consider that special effects or if the makeup person was really good but the mark it leaves behind looks so real.
Netflix has the movie rated at about 4.75/5 stars. I would give it a 2.5/5 stars. What I think happens is people are told that this is a great movie and then pretend to enjoy it so they can seem better than you because they liked it and you didn’t. When in reality it is decent, but nothing special.
If you work construction with a bunch of foreigners and understand broken English you will probably love this movie as you will be able to understand it. If you’re like me and are someone who prefers to be able to understand the movies you watch, you will think it was decent. You won’t say you wasted 2+ hours watching, but you also won’t want to watch it again. It’s just good enough to not be a waste of time which is exactly how I imagine this review to be.
I know it sounds like it I am recommending this movie even though it’s under the movie unrecommendation category so let me say this. If you are on the fence of should I see this or should I not? Don’t see it. You don’t need to spend 2+ hours on a movie where you can’t understand what is being said.
Whose Thought Is It?
Yesterday I had one of my least favorite thoughts in life. It is my least favorite because it starts out so good but ends poorly. At church I had a brilliant thought…Don’t make permanent decisions in temporary situations. For about a 3 Mississippi I thought I was the most brilliant guy who ever lived. Look out Socrates there’s a new sheriff town. Or maybe I should say a new Hoplite in town? I have no idea what the ancient Greeks called there sheriff but rest assured I was it in that moment. Then I had the worst thought ever. Somebody has to have already thought of that right? A Quick Google search and my ego was more deflated than the New England Patriots footballs. Calm down Bill Simmons it’s a joke!
Now to the important issues. I am sure somebody could spend their whole life pondering my next question and never figure it out, but I still want to ask it. Is this a thought I would have had if I was born 100 years ago or did my environment assist me in it?
Obviously if I had the idea to make an app that would be heavily influenced by my environment. Nobody had any idea that an iPhone would exist 100 years ago so the chances of them inventing an app would be slim. If somebody did have an idea for an app back then they were probably called insane and listed in the DSM-5 had that existed. Actually, what if somebody had the idea for that back then to? My head officially hurts now.
Another example is this. Last week a guy came over for dinner from Uganda. He had been here for the last couple months and I asked what the craziest part about America is to him. He replied “Disney World. It is unreal. In Africa that is something you can’t even imagine. It would be impossible to think of something like that and when I go back and tell people about it they probably won’t believe me.” I said that in a little better English than he did but the message is the same. If you are in Africa, Disney World is unimaginable.
I think we can agree that most products are determined by environment, but what about words though? I may be a little bias because I want to take credit for what I said and prove my brilliance, but are they influenced by the time period you live in?
I say no.
I would say the way you phrase it over the years can change but the thought would still be there. I think I had a genius/brilliant/super awesome thought that was not influenced by environment. I also think most people think the same way I do and it would make sense for someone to have already had that thought on their own a few years before me.
I think what will change is the record of brilliant thoughts meaning this. Every thought that somebody finds even somewhat smart will now be written down. Gone are the days where somebody will have a brilliant thought but only be able to tell it to their sheep. Thoughts now get shared and re-shared with ease on social media. Every dipstick like me who doesn’t have a college degree now has access to be able to post and share every thought I have. I dare say by the time I die I will have more thoughts written down than Plato ever did. Which is kind of cool for me to think about but scary for everyone else who reads this.
I do believe that if I lived in Africa, Greenland, or Russia I would have still had that same thought. Let me know what you guys think? Do you agree? Disagree? Or did this fry your brain?
To the Government More Specifically the Police
I respect what you guys do when it comes to stopping, fighting, and solving crime. What you guys do taxpaying citizens who are on their way to work is despicable. Let me paint a picture of my morning.
It is a Friday morning which is the last day of my work week. I am tired from a long weeks work and am running a few minutes late. When I work I make a trade. I trade 8 hours of my time for a paycheck. I trade that I am willing to make. You know who benefits the most from the trade I make? It’s you guys. While I trade 8 hours of my time, you guys are the big winners because 25% of my paycheck goes to you. I am completely fine paying my taxes when I am not treated with distain. When I am running a few minutes late I get nervous, as should you guys. If I am late I can get fired. If I get fired you guys lose out on 25% of my paycheck and in fact I could then go collect unemployment. That not only makes it so you get no money from me, but that you actually have to pay me. That seems like a bad trade for you guys doesn’t?
To anybody who says the police are just doing their job that is false. Here is a portion of a job description for being a police officer I found online.
Police officers work in partnership with the communities they serve to maintain law and order, protect members of the public and their property, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for all citizens.
Hmm I don’t see giving out tickets to people headed to work on there. If you think how does he know you are heading to work? This is how. It’s a Friday morning at 7:30am. Everybody on the road is heading to work. I got pulled over by the Bremerton police in Bremerton. If they have already fixed all the above mentioned issues such as crime and protecting me then by all means focus on people going 8 mph over the speed limit. Until then though let keep are priorities in order. This is not a Barney Fife scenario where if you give them 5 they take 10. If you give them 10 they take 15. Nope! I have and will continue to take around 8 mph over. Maybe Bremerton police has solved all the crime problems already? According to neighbourhoodscout.com Bremerton has a 6 on the index scale. The scale they use is 1-100 with 100 being the safest. Does not seem like they have fixed all the other problems quite yet. What about the safety part when close to my house a couple months ago a woman and baby were murdered at 3am? That does not make me feel too safe. The good news though is that I got pulled over this morning so that must mean the solved the case…oh wait.
You may think well don’t blame the cop, blame the system. Somebody is telling them to pull people over. I do blame the system as well. In Washington state in 1909 the speed limit set was 24 mph. I got pulled over in a 30 mph. you are telling me that in the last 106 years that the speed limit has gone up only 6 mph? I know that on freeways we can go 60 mph but the 24 mph isn’t freeway driving because they didn’t exist 1909.
Here is a picture of a car from 1909.
My car has airbags, disk brakes, traction control, far superior tires, and countless other improvements. Why the utter distain for you citizens? All I want to do is drive to work and going 40 mph is completely safe even if the speed limit is 30. The 30 mph speed limit is insulting with modern day cars. When I got pulled over I could see a speed limit sign 100 feet in front of me that read 35 mph. In 3 more seconds I would have only been going 5 over, which shouldn’t matter because all that should matter is my safety. As I just mentioned I have never been safer in the history of time when it comes to driving a car.
In 1909 a racing car had 100HP. If you go by a used 2006 corolla that comes with 126HP. My point being that we have the technology in are cars to get up to speed much faster. There really is no reason for the speed limits to be so slow.
Yes I am mad I got pulled over and ticketed. So are 4 other people that I saw get pulled over on my drive to work. One of them by the same guy who had just pulled me over. As I listed above Bremerton is in the top 6% of worst crime cities in the country, so no I don’t feel safe. I am not that impressed with your crime solving rate either. If only you guys had extra people who weren’t doing any real police work who could help you solve them? I guess you better start an initiative for more funding so you could the needed man power. Or maybe throw a policeman’s ball? I’m just spit balling here.
Oh and thanks for giving me the option of a payment plan on the ticket. I thought I already did a weekly payment plan with you guys from my paycheck?
